Grace Based Parenting

In less than 20 pages the topics below are surfaced.

p. 16-  All parenting styles result from a parent’s theology, “Their theology is combination of the way they view God and the way they think He views them.”

P 19-  “Grace-based parents spend their time entrusting themselves to Christ.  They live to know God more.  Their children are daily recipients of the grace these parents are enjoying from the Lord.”

p. 20- “grace does not exclude obedience, respect, boundaries, or discipline, but it does determine the climate in which these important parts of parenting are carried out.”

If these topics could help your parenting perspective pick up a copy of Grace Based Parenting today.

Children Alway Mind, Right?

Written as much from a father’s perspective as that of a psychologist, Dr. Kevin Leman’s Making Children Mind without Losing Yours (Revell, 2003) is an intensely practical guide to parenting. It covers the whole gamut of classical parenting issues, from spanking to allowance and does so in frank and simple language, dotted with numerous real life examples. Dr. Leman’s thesis centers around an idea he calls Reality Discipline, a parenting approach decidedly different from simple rewards and punishment that strives to let each individual circumstance and its
outcome be what teaches children. The book certainly has a Christian spin, being based primarily
upon Ephesians 6:1-4 but it is written in such a way as to appeal to non-believers as well.
While mainly meat and potatoes advice, Dr. Leman inserts a few particularly insightful
ideas which, when coupled with a little extra thought and meditation, can provide a powerful new outlook on parenting.

Use the Power of Google

In a Google world everything is at our fingertips.  Redeem this power by using Google maps to look at the locations where things happened in Bible times.  Use Google maps to look at the countries where our missionaries serve, to get an ariel of our own communinity and pray for the people that frequent the locations that are easily visible by looking at the satelite view in Google Maps. See maps.google.com or call Than at 303-986-1527 for a quick walkthrough on how to use the maps to bring the truth of God to life for your children.

Last Chance to sign up--Registrations in Welcome Center

UW Sports Ministry is returning to Southern Gables to help us shape the skills and hearts of our children.  Two years ago UW and SGC hosted a sports camp with emphasis in basketball, soccer and cheer.  This year we are hoping to return with even more sports.  In order to do that, we need your help.  If you are an interested parent or a coach of a baseball, football, or volleyball team and would like to make a difference in children’s lives through sports call 303-986-1527. Ask to talk to Than Baylor.

In order to offset the cost of flying in college athletes to lead we have set the camp cost at $69 per child.  Consider grounding your child more firmly in Christ through the sports that they already love.  Registration forms are available at the children’s ministry kiosk in the welcome center of Southern Gables Church or by calling 303-986-1527.

Learning for Young Ones

Adam, Adam, What do You See? is a great children's book that exposes children to a number of characters in the Bible while having repetition that sticks well in the brain. One great way to extend the influence of this book is to take each character described and look at the Biblical accounts connected with them.

Lolita Effect

Lolita Effect: The media sexualization of young girls and what we can do about it

Gigi Durham’s book, The Lolita Effect, has an important message for parents and other concerned adults about the exploitative and damaging sexualization of young girls in the media.  Ms. Durham begins by identifying five myths put forth in the media about young girls and their sexuality: If you’ve got it, flaunt it, Anatomy of a sex goddess, Pretty babies, Violence is sexy, What boys like.  At the end of each chapter is a discussion of how to take action against each myth and empower girls to make healthy decisions about their sexuality.

One point I find particularly disturbing is the internationality of the culture and the media to sexualize young girls.  Nabokov’s 12-year old Lolita was truly an innocent victim of Humbert’s perverted passion and greed.  In today’s culture, it is difficult for young girls to preserve their innocence, with pressure from the media for girls to explore their sexuality at younger and younger ages.

Clearly, Ms. Durham has a liberal view of sexuality, and not a scriptural one.  She repeatedly points out a media bias against gay teens (citing Disney programming as one example).  While the author does not write from a point of faith, her message is certainly valuable for believers and nonbelievers alike.  The author encourages us all to be “smart, proactive critical media consumers” which is certainly apt advice.
